Dear Family of Mary!
Our Lady has spoken about God's plan in Medjugorje. Of course this plan is hidden, as are the secrets. But she knows what it is! And she is with us so that we can be part of that plan. Fr. Slavko wrote very well about that plan in a reflection on the message of August 25, 1991 which was during the terrible war in the Balkans. I want to share a bit of what he wrote, as it is truly beautiful, and very helpful for us in these days:
August 25, 1991
"Dear Children! Today also I invite you to prayer, now as never before when my plan has begun to be realized. Satan is strong and wants to sweep away my plans of peace and joy and make you think that my Son is not strong in His decisions. Therefore, I call all of you, dear children, to pray and fast still more firmly. I invite you to self-renunciation for nine days so that, with your help, everything that I desire to realize through the secrets I began in Fatima, may be fulfilled. I call you, dear children, to now grasp the importance of my coming and the seriousness of the situation. I want to save all souls and present them to God. Therefore, let us pray that everything I have begun be fully realized. Thank you for having responded to my call."
"I invite you to prayer, now as never before when my plan has begun to be realized."
The situation is really serious yet Mary, it seems, sees differently and with entirely different eyes. What is this plan of which she speaks? She did not come to tell us that war is coming, but rather to tell us that peace is always possible and therefore the plan can only be that all people live in peace and that all souls can be saved. This is because we know that God's will for us is only our peace. So in this situation that grows consistently more and more difficult and complicated, she sees something else developing.
Mary speaks from her own experiences. On Good Friday where almost all people other than the Apostles saw only the catastrophe and the end, where many people had lost all hope, she withstood the suffering. She stood loyally by the Cross and in that very moment she was not destroyed as mother, but rather again confirmed as mother.
When Jesus said:"This is your mother. This is your son." Mary was officially given the right for all of us, to accept all of us as her children. One can say that all of us were adopted by her under the Cross. We are really her children and she is really also our mother. She therefore can and wishes to continue to lead us and does not fear suffering, but knows that suffering is a situation in which new life should be born.
Life is not given to us to destroy us, but rather so that God's power and Mary's intercession can be shown to us in our difficulties and weaknesses. But to transform suffering into the triumph, one must truly pray and Mary tells us to pray "as never before"!
I believe that we should take this seriously and give much time to prayer and this is also with others. Simply said, these are difficult times and for this reason alone we must spend far more time with God. Only in this way will we vanquish our doubts, our fears and our distrust. Only in this way can something new be born in our hearts during our suffering. These words or this call can be compared to an epidemic. When an illness, a virus or another contagious condition is in the air, one has to be so much more careful and undertake so much more to protect the body.
These times are contagious times. Fear, distrust, anger and hate can all very easily attach themselves to our souls and then start producing similar fruits. If we truly start to pray now "as never before", then we ourselves will be saved and at the same time we will be able to help others to themselves assist Mary with her plan. She herself, of course, did not wish for this situation in our country or in the whole world and has after all come to us as the Queen of Peace to tell us that peace is really possible.
BUT because humanity with its behavior has led the world into its present state, she again intervenes and says: Have no fear, come with me, pray and the plan will come into reality.   Certainly every one of us who hears this so hopeful message will with all their hearts say: "I am here. I hear you and I will work with you.' This alone is then already the beginning of the triumph of one's own inner life. May it truly turn out to be this way for all of us! This message is however, not only for those who are being threatened by war but in reality for all people, because the plan that has been entrusted to Mary is the plan for all people, for all of humanity and, one can say, for the entire universe. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric, OFM. "Mother! Lead us to Peace!" Reflections of Mary's Messages in Medjugorje from July 1990 until December 1994, p. 89-90)
Fr. Slavko had a way of presenting the paradoxes of life as opportunities for growth. Jesus's death on the Cross was the great paradox, which led to unlimited life for all who would accept Him. The war in Bosnia was terribly difficult, but the people of Medjugorje survived and grew stronger in their faith through prayer. And we now, if we choose to accept Our Lady's guidance, will face these difficult times and emerge with the new life of faith intact and strengthened. Our Lady truly is leading us to peace. Peace is her Son.
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
