Dear Family of Mary!
February 13, 1986 "Dear children! This Lent is a special incentive for you to change. Start from this moment. Turn off the television and renounce various things that are of no value. Dear children, I am calling you individually to conversion. This season is for you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Our Lady gave us this simple message 30 years ago! Doesn't she sound excited about Lent? I think so. "This season is for you!" Our Lady is excited because the graces of Lent are very strong. The practices of Lent are so beneficial for spiritual growth, i.e. prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Scripture readings for daily Mass and especially on Sunday are so powerful, showing us the incredible love of Jesus for us in His public ministry and in His Passion. And the Heavenly Father is so ready to pour down conversion graces upon us as we turn back to Him in repentance and humility.
This time is a time for change, for a new start. This time is a time for conversion and healing.
One of the best ways to live Lent is through sacrifices. Our Lady gave this message also during the Lent of 1986:
March 13, 1986 "Dear children! Today I call you to live Lent by means of your little sacrifices. Thank you for every sacrifice you have brought me. Dear children, live that way continuously, and with your love help me to present the sacrifice. God will reward you for that. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Little sacrifices, lived continuously! This is much harder than it sounds. It requires a lot of discipline to sacrifice in little ways, all day long. We have to practice putting ourselves second in every circumstance. Decide to be kind or pleasant all the time, not just when we feel like it. Choose to bless everyone we meet or think of, no matter what! Bless and not think badly of them. That takes tremendous courage and discipline. Put ourselves in the back of the line, in the slowest lane in traffic, or at a less desirable checkout lane at the store. There are countless ways to sacrifice, to practice humility, to put others first.

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. We will choose to be blessed with ashes as a sign that we are sinners and that we want to live this Lent so as to receive all the graces and blessings that God is making available to us. This season is for us! This is our time to shed our worldliness and selfish desires, and to draw close to the Lord who loves us to distraction. This is the season for us to come home.
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
