The Conversion of St. Paul, the Apostle
Dear Family of Mary!
On Friday (January 22) Denis and I got into a bit of a discussion. He felt called to read Philippians 4:4-9 on that day, which is a day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn, in the USA. That very day thousands of citizens were marching in our capitol in solidarity with the unborn. For me that day is always the saddest day. And so I couldn't quite understand his choice of Scriptures for our Rosary!
"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you." (Phil 4:4-9)
It turns out that this Scripture was used at Holy Mass that day, which reinforced the call to rejoice! It is a wonderful Scripture, full of hope and strength! But I was not in the mood!
Well, we agreed to disagree. But then Olga sent me an email which made sense out of it all. So I will share it with you! Thank you, Olga, for helping us out!
Dear Denis and Cathy,

I thought perhaps you may find this helpful. In Russian and some other Slavic languages the Angel's greeting was translated like "Rejoice, Mary". So every time you pray the Mysteries of the Rosary, even the Sorrowful Mysteries, you say "Rejoice, Mary..." And like Cathy said, it "does not feel right". But faith is not feelings, faith is... well, faith. It's something we need to learn.
Joy is not a 'comfortable feeling' but something else. It's a gift from God, and we receive it through faith. So how do we rejoice when we see the conquests of Satan? How do we rejoice when we enter the Passion of Christ? And He is suffering the same in His Body even today. All the betrayals in His Own church, the lukewarmness, the blasphemies... if Jesus is getting this from His Own, how will those who don't know His Love come to Him? How do we rejoice about all this?
And yet, the Angel says, "Rejoice, Mary..." And that is indeed the word of God addressed to us, "Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say, Rejoice". Why? Because "the Lord is at hand". So this is the reason for our joy: "The Lord is at hand". The Lord is there in every suffering. Our wounds can become means of our union with God, if we choose it. We can console Him, by allowing Him to share His Cup with us. That is the joy. But unless we choose to love in God's way, we will never understand why He wants us to suffer (yes Denis, He does want us to suffer!) or how a way of the Cross can be a way of Joy. Without Love - we will never get it.
But Mary can teach us to rejoice always in the Lord. Her joy is not blindness to the works of Satan, but her joy is communion with the Lord, Who is working through her to defeat Satan. We are invited to enter that Joy, by entering the Immaculate Heart of Mary and learning to share in Her Work.
Perhaps it's a question of vocabulary. It's like, when the visionaries describe Our Lady, they say, there are no words in human language to describe her, because we have only earthly words. The same with Joy in the Lord. This is what Our Lady wishes to teach us, but we just don't get it, we are so attached to earthly things, we only know about earthly joy, and that's all we seek.
This is the message of Our Lady that I picked today for meditation, and to me it is like an answer to what I've been praying about, the Joy that Our Lady wants to teach us.

"Dear children! I invite you now to be open to God. See, children, how nature is opening herself and is giving life and fruits. In the same way I invite you to live with God and to surrender completely to him. Children, I am with you and I want to introduce you continuously to the joy of life. I desire that everyone may discover the joy and love which can be found only in God and which only God can give. God doesn't want anything from you only your surrender. Therefore, children, decide seriously for God because everything else passes away. Only God doesn't pass away. Pray to be able to discover the greatness and joy of life which God gives you. Thank you for having responded to my call. "

I also was remembering the words of Mother Teresa in this novena http://www.motherteresa.org/Novena/2012.html , day 7.
She was also saying that joy is not an 'emotion' but a sign of union with God. It is a sign of God's presence in our heart, of His Love burning in our hearts.
Well, these are the quotes from Mother Teresa:
"To bring joy into our very soul the Good God has given Himself to us... Joy is not simply a matter of temperament. In the service of God and souls, it is always hard - all the more reason why we should try to acquire it and make it grow in our hearts. Joy is prayer. Joy is strength. Joy is love. Joy is a net of love by which you can catch many souls. God loves a cheerful giver. He gives most, who gives with joy. If in the work you have difficulties and you accept them with joy, with a big smile, in this like in any other things others will see your good work and glorify the Father. The best way to show your gratitude to God and people is to accept everything with joy. A joyful heart is the normal result of a heart burning with love".
"Without joy there is no love, and love without joy is not true love. And so, we need to bring that love and that joy into the world of today".
"Joy was the strength of Our Lady, too. Our Lady was the first Missionary of Charity. She was the first one to receive Jesus physically and to carry Jesus to others; and she went in haste. Only joy could give her this strength and swiftness to go and do the work of a handmaid".
(Funny the quote in the middle wouldn't get smaller. I tried to make the print smaller but couldn't. Perhaps mother Teresa is trying to tell us something! :))
Always looking forward to sailing with you, and praying for you and Denis and everyone in the boat!

With Love and full of Joy!

Thank you Olga, very beautiful! We need to understand and embrace the joy of Our Lady, the joy of the Lord!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
