Dear Family of Mary!
"Dear children! I wish to call you to a living of the Holy Mass. There are many of you who have sensed the beauty of the Holy Mass, but there are also those who come unwillingly. I have chosen you, dear children, but Jesus gives you His graces in the Mass. Therefore, consciously live the Holy Mass and let your coming to it be a joyful one. Come to it with love and make the Mass your own. Thank you for having responded to my call." (April 3, 1986)

Immediately I heard the homily for English Mass on Sunday, August 9, I knew I would have to transcribe it for you all. Fr. Allen captured something about Medjugorje, about Our Lady, and what she is giving us that I have always known, but never had the words for. Our Lady is revealing to us what is beautiful in Medjugorje, truly beautiful. She is revealing the mystery of God's love, which is beautiful!! Enjoy this homily:

Fr. Allen O'Sullivan, Homily, English Mass Medjugorje August 9, 2015

Pope John Paul II was an artist. And like every artist, he had a heart sensitive to Beauty. He courted beauty. He sought her in his writings, in his play, in his teachings. The mystery of Beauty in our world which saves. He wrote to artists in the modern world in around 1999 and he asked them to have this courtship with Beauty. To seek her, look out for her be attentive to her when she appeared on the written page, in music, in drama, because the artist must be sensitive to the epiphany, to the disclosure of Beauty in our world.

That Beauty always reveals to us something of the Beauty of the Incarnate Word, the Beauty of Jesus Christ, of the drama of the Word made flesh. That into the center of our civilization, our humanity, our world and our surroundings, there is this epiphany, this disclosure of the beauty of God in the midst of us if we have the sensitivity of the artist to see it. To see the splendor of the Word made flesh, the mystery of Jesus Christ.

"No one comes to me unless the Father draw him." As human beings we have an attraction to what is appealing, what is beautiful. And that is what is there in the Word of Jesus Christ. His words, his silences, his time, his gestures, everything points to the Beauty of God in this man. This carpenter of Nazareth, this teacher, this Galilean. This one who revealed himself as the equal of God, "the Father and I are one". So everything that Jesus does in the mystery of Church is an epiphany, a revelation of the Church, if we have eyes and hearts and senses and a supernatural sense of faith to see it in his face. The beauty which attracts and transfigures the world. The Beauty which empties itself on the Cross in an act of complete self-giving love for us, for you and for me. That is the epiphany of Beauty in the world. When the hands could not go further out, when the Word Incarnate could not speak more eloquently as it did on the arms of the cross. That is God's beauty; that is God speaking to us.

When you come to Medjugorje you are invited to become an artist. You are invited to look again for the Beauty of God. The God who appeals, who is persuasive, who is symphonic, who is dramatic. He calls us to Himself, with every heartfelt beat of our hearts. All that captivates, all that is lovely, Jesus Christ through all these things calls us to Himself in the Holy Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist is the epiphany, is the disclosure of beauty in our world if you can see it.

That is why during the drama of the Mass, the priest is dressed in sacred vestments, sacred incense is offered to God, the music is sacred, the words are sacred, "Hozanna, Hozanna, Hozanna... Gloria...Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi..." All of these things point to the beauty of the Word made flesh.   In the Holy Mass there is a descent of Beauty into the world. Beauty comes from heaven into the world, it is a meeting between heaven and earth. Heaven and earth are united during the Holy Mass. Heavenly things meet with earthly things, with our humanity in the Mass. And if we see that Heavenly Beauty our hearts will be transfigured, we will change, we will begin to see the world in a new way, we will begin to see ourselves, others, God, humanity, in a new way. We will become beautiful. Because beauty is a matter of seeing.

For St. Thomas Aquinas, beauty is that which pleases when seen. Beauty gives us pleasure. It is like looking upon the beauty of the Beloved. Your eyes don't want to move from that beauty, from that centering of your heart upon what is truly beautiful.

And if you can do that, you become ordered within yourself. If you can see what is essentially beautiful, you know how to appropriate, how to have an ordered affection for all that is beautiful, all that is good and all that is true in our world. All of your humanity, your senses, your sexuality, your emotions, your minds, your wills, become ordered to beauty and goodness. That is how we become other Christs. That is how we become imitators of the Word Incarnate, of the Word made flesh. Because we see beauty. Our hearts have been made so sensitive, but they love everything in its place, in its right order, in its appropriate setting. We see the Beauty of Jesus Christ in the face of the human person, even when it is hidden, we find Him.

So what is Medjugorje? Medjugorje is a courtship with Beauty. It is looking for Beauty. But it is letting that Beauty be revealed to you. It is not something you discover by your own capacities. It is something that is revealed to you. It is something that is put on your heart in Medjugorje. If you discover the Mother of God in Medjugorje you will discover the Beauty of the Eucharist. Your heart will be captivated. Your heart will never be the same, nor would you want it to be. Because you will change, you will start to become beautiful like she is. She receives the beauty of the Word Incarnate more clearly than any of us. Why would she want to lead us towards anything else? Why would she not want our lives to be centered on this Beauty of the face of Christ? Why would she want us anywhere else but before Him in the Eucharist? Why would we choose anything else above Him?

You can hear Fr. Allen on the recording of English Mass, 080915 in the English Mass Archive on our home page.
